12- SARDU:

SARDU là phần mềm có thể tạo Multibootable ISO và ổ USB. Ổ này có chứa một vài phần mềm diệt virus, các công cụ, phiên bản hiện hành của Linux và Windows. Tất cả những gì bạn cần làm chỉ là chuyển file ISO vào folder ISO và thưởng thức nó trên ổ USB.

LaTeX Setup and Tutorial

Introduction

LaTeX works like this: First, you use a text editor (we'll be using the freeware Texmaker) to create a LaTeX document.

Then, you run a LaTeX compiler (we'll be using MiKTeX).
Finally, you need to use some kind of viewer/previewer (we'll be using Yap, which stands for "Yet Another Previewer") to view or print the formatted file. You will do everything from the program Texmaker, which will utilize MiKTeX and Yap. This document will take you through the steps of downloading, installing, configuring, and working with MiKTeX and Texmaker. Be sure to follow ALL of the directions below, IN ORDER.
Downloading and installing MiKTeX for Windows
1. Go to miktex.org/2.8/setup.
2. Click the Download button next to "Basic MiKTeX 2.7" Installer
3. Now click "Save File".
4. Find where the file was saved and double click on it.
5. Windows will ask "Unknown publisher, install anyway?". Click "run".
6. The Setup wizard will now open. Click the box "I accept" and keep clicking "next" until the setup is complete. Don't change any of the defaults.
7. At the end, click close.

Now you are ready to download the text editor, Texmaker for Windows.

Go to http://www.xm1math.net/texmaker/download.html
Now click under the appropriate platform. If you are using windows, click on Executable file for win32 systems : texmakerwin32_install.exe.
Now click "Run" (or click save, save the installer to the desktop, and then double click the icon).
Windows will ask "Unknown publisher, install anyway?". Click "run".
The Setup wizard will now open. Click the box "I agree" then click "install" and keep clicking "next" until the setup is complete. Don't change any of the defaults.

Downloading and installing TeXShop for Macintosh OS X

Go to http://www.tug.org/mactex/
Click on MacTeX.mpkg.zip to download. If you have trouble, then click on "mirror page" above and select an appropriate mirror site. The download will start automatically.
The file to be downloaded is 1.2GB zipped and took me over 1/2 an hour on JMU wireless. If you have dialup or another slow connection, try downloading "smaller packages" The unzipped file requires over 2G of space.
Click "install" and follow the prompts.Hello

Creating a simple document using LaTeX with TeXMaker for Windows

Now we're finally ready to write a document in LaTeX. The instructions below will take you through the process of creating a very simple document.

Open: Texmaker from the Start menu. You may want to put a shortcut on your desktop.
Write: In the upper right box, type this:

3. Save: Save this file as "universe.tex" to whatever directory you choose. Be sure the extension is "tex" and NOT "txt". Also be sure to select "All Files" under the "Save as Type" menu before you save. 4. Compile: Now click on the little "PDFLAT" icon on the toolbar. You should get a message below the window which reads "Process Started" "Process exited normally".
5. View: Now click the PDF icon on the tool bar to view the PDF file.

Texmaker has a special command called "Quick Build". If you click on the "Q" button to the left of the "Latex" button, Texmaker will show you the log file in the lower window with any errors highlighted in red. First you need to configure Quick Build. On the menu bar at the top of the screen, click on "Options", then "Configure Texmaker". Now click the button to the left calls "Quick Build". Click the button that says "PDF LaTeX + View PDF". Then "ok".

Creating a simple document using LaTeX with TeXShop for Macs

Now we're finally ready to write a document in LaTeX. The instructions below will take you through the process of creating a very simple document.

Find: TexShop under Applications/TeX. Drag the icon someplace convenient.
Open: Double click the TeXShop icon. This will open a blank document.
Write: In thewindow, type this:

Hello universe!
\end{document}

4. Compile: Now click on the "typeset" icon on the upper left. You will be prompted to save the file. Be sure to save it with a .tex (not .txt) extention.
5. View: A PDF file will automatically pop up with the finished product..

Handling compiling errors

LaTeX is a very picky typesetting program, and a lot of tiny things can cause compiling errors. By following the instructions below you will introduce an error into your universe.tex file and then see how to deal with it.

Change your .tex file so that it looks like this:

\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}

Howdy universe!

The & is a special character.

\end{document}

Now click Typeset and you will get the following error: "Misplaced alignment tab character &".
In LaTeX, the "&" character is used for tabbing (alignment) in certain environments, but it is not a legal character on its own; that is what the first line of the error message above is saying - that the character "&" is being used somewhere it shouldn't. Click "Go To Error" to go to the place where the compiler thinks there is an error in the editing window.

4. To fix the problem, you could "comment out" the entire line by placing a % at the beginning of the line. Try this and click typeset again.
5. Or you can do as LaTeX suggests, and put a "\" in front of the &. Remove the % and try this.

Printing a finished LaTeX document

If you want to print right from the computer you are working on, it's easy; just choose "Print" from the "File" menu of the PDF viewer. Don't print from the Texmaker window, because you will only be printing the LaTeX code, not the finished product.

How to Build a Chrome Extension

Google Chrome is the best web browser around right now, and part of Chrome's appeal is owed to its excellent extensions. The good news: It's not that hard to get started making your own Chrome extensions. In this guide, we'll take you from the most simple Hello World extension (no HTML or JavaScript knowledge required) to a more complex RSS-fetching extension to get you started down your path as a Chrome-extension-making guru.

I released my first Chrome extension—a Google Music power-up extension called Music Plus—this summer, followed by a simpler Lifehacker Notifier extension that monitors Lifehacker's RSS feed, displays notifications of new posts in HTML 5 popups or badges, and so on.

Today, we'll walk through how to make your first and simplest Hello World Chrome extension, then we'll make a light version of the Lifehacker Notifier extension that fetches an RSS feed and displays feed items in a popup window when you click your extension's button. So let's get extending!

Note: While the Hello World extension requires zero knowledge of JavaScript or HTML (and, frankly, you could have a lot of fun with just that if you wanted), this second half of this post requires an understanding of both. To make it to the end of the post, some experience will be necessary. We've also previously shown you how to build a Firefox extension, so if Firefox is more your speed, you may want to check out that guide.

What You Need to Know Before You Start

If you're comfortable putting together a web site—that is, you know a little HTML and are familiar with JavaScript—you can make a Chrome extension. If you're new to HTML and JavaScript, our beginner's guides for learning to code and how to make a web site are great starting points.

Beyond those two core competencies, there's really nothing special you need to know. Chrome extensions are delightfully easy to make if you've ever spent any time making web pages or hacking away with JavaScript, and even if you're only a beginner in those arenas, you can probably pull off a Chrome extension. So let's do just that.

Our Project: From "Hello World" to RSS Fetcher

For the purpose of this guide, we're going to start with a "Hello World" extension. If you're new to programming, the classic "Hello World" program is a rite of passage for getting started with any language, framework, or project, and its goal is simply to create something capable of outputting the text "Hello World".

After we finish our "Hello World" project, I'll walk you through the basics of making an RSS fetching extension along the lines of the Lifehacker Notifier extension for Chrome. Basically this extension adds a button to your toolbar, monitors Lifehacker's RSS feed, and displays our posts in a handy drop-down. It also shows a popup when a new post appears and displays an unread badge on the extension button. So let's get started.

Manifest.json: The Cornerstone of Your Chrome Extension

Every Chrome extension consists of, at minimum, a file called manifest.json, which defines the basics of your extension—its name, description, version number, what kind of extension it is (there are a handful of different things a Chrome extension can do, which we'll talk more about below), the permissions it needs to run (e.g., what web sites it needs access to), and so on.

So let's get started. Create a new folder—let's name it Hello World—and, using your favorite text editor, create a new text file called manifest.json. Copy and paste the following code into it:

The name, version, and description are all pretty self-explanatory, but browser_action is something new! The browser_action property tells Chrome that we're making an extension that will add a button to the toolbar. So far, all we've done is assign an icon to that button. Basically you're telling Chrome that your extension has an icon, called icon.png, and that it's located in the same folder as your manifest.json file. Of course, you don't have an icon.png file in your Hello World folder just yet, so let's fix that.

Download this tiny image (via) and copy it to your Hello World folder.

We haven't done much yet, but you've actually already made something you can test out, so let's do that. Point Chrome to chrome://extensions/, tick the Developer mode checkbox at the top-left of that window, then click the Load unpacked extension button. Point Chrome to your Hello World folder, click Select or OK (varies by operating system), Chrome will load up your stub of an extension, and you should see your little globe icon appear in your Chrome toolbar thusly:

If you try clicking your Hello World button, however, you'll notice it does an unsurprising amount of nothing. Let's fix that.

Creating a Browser Action, or, Wouldn't It Be Nice if That Button Did Something?

Open up your manifest.json file and add a popup action that points to an HTML file called popup.html, like so:

Note: The filenames don't matter as long as you're pointing Chrome to the right files—you could call it helloworld.html in manifest.json as long as you also named your file helloworld.html.

Speaking of, you now need to create popup.html. So, once again, create an HTML file called popup.html and save it in your Hello World folder. Inside popup.html, simply add the text "Hello World!" (In theory you'd want to put some valid HTML markup in there, but it's not strictly necessary, so we're going to skip it here.)

Make sure you've saved manifest.json and popup.html, head back to chrome://extensions/, click the expand icon next to the Hello World extension in the Extension list, then click the Reload link (pictured at right).

Chrome will reload the extension using your updated code. Now click the button and get ready for the money shot!

Achievement unlocked! You've Hello World-ed your first Chrome extension. Nice work. Now let's take things up a notch. (If you had any trouble along the way, download my working Hello World.zip and compare it with yours.)

Where Do We Go From Here?

So Chrome can add buttons to your toolbar, you can click those buttons, and something can happen. Neato! You could stop your extension development here and have plenty of fun installing extensions on your friends' computers—add a little HTML image markup in place of the "Hello World!" text and you've unlocked a prankster's delight! Imagine the possibilities. Your unsuspecting friend clicks an alluring new button and—slam, goatse! Or toss in a YouTube video and... RICKROLL! (Or don't do this. Your friends won't thank you, but they might if they knew what you weren't subjecting them to.)

Impressing your friends with your sparkling sense of humor will only take you so far, though. You've probably seen the basic click-button-show-drop-down behavior in tons of different Chrome extensions before. But you've also seen extensions that perform very different tasks. If you take a gander at the Chrome Extension Developer's Guide, you'll see the familiar Browser Actions at the top of the list, but you'll also notice a ton of other things your extension can do, from creating desktop notifications or adding a keyword to the omnibox to creating an options page or performing actions that modify specific web pages. When you're ready to dive deep into extension development, you'll want to page through the developer documentation to get a feel for what your extension might take advantage of. You may also want to take a look at the manifest.json documentation to get a feel for some of your other options available to your manifest.json file.

For now, we're going to dive a little deeper into the browser actions. It's time to make yourself an RSS-reading and -notifying Chrome extension. So let's do it.

It's Time to Next Level This Hog

Now that you've safely navigated from zero to Hello World, we're going to pick up the pace a little. The "Hello World" extension didn't use a lick of JavaScript (apart from the JSON), and we didn't actually write any HTML, either. This section will rectify that.

First, let's take a look at the new and improved manifest.json we'll use for this extension:

Let's quickly walk through what's new here.

First, you'll notice I've added icons. These are the icons that will display as the extension's icon in various places, including the Extensions page of your browser and in the Chrome Web Store should you decide to distribute your work.
homepage_url points to whatever site you want to associate with the extension you've written.
background_page is an HTML page that will run in the background constantly, allowing you to maintain a certain state or perform regular actions for different parts of your extension. In our extension, the background page will poll the RSS feed to see if anything new has been pushed to the feed.
permissions tells Chrome what special permissions you need access to. Chrome sandboxes extensions so they don't have access to all your browsing activity unless they request it (and you allow it). The permissions property allows you to set exactly what permissions you need. In our case, we need permission to load an RSS feed from a root URL, and we want to be able to create HTML 5 notifications when new items arrive.

You'll have noticed that our manifest.json file also calls for a lot of new files and folders, so instead of requiring you to set them all up yourself, you can download a basic, working version of this code that fetches from the Lifehacker RSS feed here.

(I've decided to include the images I used in the Lifehacker Notifier extension, but obviously you can swap out whatever images work for you.)

You'll also notice that I've included jQuery. If you're unfamiliar with jQuery, it's a JavaScript framework that makes doing a lot of things in JavaScript insanely easier. If you do anything on the web with JavaScript and you're not interesting in rebuilding the wheel and you are interested in saving a lot of time, you should learn to use jQuery. (Also, lucky you! The very cool web site Codeacademy just released an introductory guide to jQuery.)

This all may seem like it got complicated really quickly, but the main difference between our Hello World extension and this more complex RSS Fetcher is actually quite simple: Our popup.html file will now contain HTML and some JavaScript. Together, they'll actually do things beyond displaying "Hello World!" every time you click the button.

The other thing sets Chrome extension development apart from your everyday HTML and JavaScript is the Chrome extension APIs, which provide access to all kinds of functions that blur the line between your extension and the browser. So let's try a few basics.

How Our New Popup.html Works

The new popup.html file in our RSS fetching extension works like this: When you click the extension's button, it loads popup.html. When that loads, it passes a call to background.html, asking it to fetch our RSS feed. Once background.html has successfully fetched the feed, it passes the feed's XML back to popup.html, which then parses the feed into some friendly HTML, which it then displays inside the popup.

Message Passing Between Background.html and Popup.html

Because of various security sandboxing going on in Chrome, some parts of your extension can't access the same APIs or information that other parts of your extension can. To get around this, one common technique you'll need to employ in your Chrome extensions involves passing messages and data back and forth between different parts of your extension. To demonstrate the basics of how this works, I've put the method that fetches the RSS feed into background.html, and I call it from popup.html. In background.html, you'll notice the fetch_feed method:

It's a very basic function that takes a URL and a callback function as parameters, fetches the feed, then passes it to the callback function. To listen to the other parts of your extension, we add this code:

The last line, which uses the wonderfully useful chrome.extension API, tells the page to listen to requests from other parts of the extension. When it receives one, it's going to pass it to the onRequest function. As you can see, the onRequest function then checks to see if the request is asking for an action that it knows how to handle (in this case, a request to fetch a feed), and if it does, it calls that function.

Now let's jump over to the popup.html file. When it loads, the page is entirely empty. This is what kicks off changing that:

As you might have guessed, chrome.extension.sendRequest sends out the request to other parts of your extension that may be listening. And as we know, background.html is listening for this exact request! So our request bounces from popup.html to background.html, which fetches the feed, then passes it back to popup.html, which then calls a function called display_stories, passing with it the response from background.html. The display stories function (which I won't step through here but which you can see in the source) then uses a little jQuery and JavaScript to parse the XML feed and render the stories in the popup.

Do you see how unbelievably easy this is???

I kid. Once you get the hang of it, though, making Chrome extensions actually is very easy, and very fun. (Obviously the complexity varies depending on what you want to make.) If you're comfortable with HTML and JavaScript (oh, and I guess CSS if you want to make it pretty), you can do so much, and the learning curve is pretty gentle. So go forth, intrepid coders, and make thee some awesome extensions!

Troubleshooting

You're great at everything (go you!), but you're going to stumble from time to time, particularly with your JavaScript. You'll find two invaluable tools to help debug. The first is console.log, which is a JavaScript method that writes text, objects, or whatever you pass it to Chrome's JavaScript console so you can catch where things may have gone wrong.

The second is Chrome's awesome Developer Tools—and more specifically, the JavaScript console and DOM inspector. You can pull up the console for your popup by right-clicking your extension's button and selecting Inspect popup. Likewise, you can pull up the Developer Tools for background.html by clicking the background.html link in the expanded view of the extension in chrome://settings/extensions.

All of my Chrome extension-building knowledge comes from Google's very thorough documentation and good ol' fashioned World Wide Web searches when I'd get stuck. So you should certainly check out:

The Official Google Chrome Extensions Developer's Guide: It's the starting point for everything you need to know, lays our all the various extension APIs you may want to use, and so on. If you know what kind of extension you want to make, I'd highly recommend taking an hour or so, reading through the docs, and taking notes/saving links whenever you stumble upon something that sounds like you'll need it to accomplish your extension goal.
Stack Overflow's Google Chrome Extension tag page is filled with great Q&As regarding Chrome extension development. Thay thế sd với thiết bị chính xác cho hệ thống của bạn, thường là sdc. Chờ trong vài phút để hoàn thành quá trình này.

Với Microsoft Windows

Sử dụng 7zip hoặc tiện ích khác hỗ trợ giải nén các file .tar.gz để extract file ảnh vừa tải về. Microsoft Windows không thể ghi trực tiếp file này vào USB, do đó bạn cần sử dụng một phần mềm khác thay thế. Chúng tôi đề xuất Windows Image Writer hoặc rawwrite.

Khởi động Image Writer.
Chọn Chrome OS-Flow.img
Chọn USB
Kích write
Chờ vài phút để hoàn thành quá trình.

Khởi động từ USB và cài đặt Chromium OS

Cắm USB vào máy cần cài hệ điều hành Chromium OS Flow.
Nhấn F12, Esc hay bất cứ phím nào để vào chế độ tùy chọn khởi động.
Chọn USB/removable device menu.
Chờ cho đến khi hệ thống được khởi động, khoảng 8 – 12 giây. Tại thời điểm này bạn nên có một đăng nhập cơ bản cho Flow và cung cấp thông tin Google. Thường chúng ta sẽ sử dụng tài khoản gmail và mật khẩu.

Lưu ý: bạn cần đăng nhập hệ thống để kích hoạt wireless và kết nối mạng.

Chọn một Spin

Cái nhìn lướt qua đầu tiên khiến người dùng liên tưởng tới cửa sổ trình duyệt ở chế độ maximized. Nếu kích chuột vào logo màu xanh của Chromium ở góc trên bên phải sẽ đưa bạn đến một môi trường theo tab và chia thành các phần như "My Apps", "E-mail", "Games",... Điều này giúp người dùng dễ dàng truy cập các ứng dụng hơn. Bạn cũng có thể khám phá ra các ứng dụng mới, chẳng hạn 280 Slides – trang web giúp tạo ra các bài thuyết trình dạng slide.

Kết luận

Bây giờ bạn đã trải nghiệm được mùi vị của Chromium OS. Đây là một dự án nhỏ đầy hấp dẫn mà Hexxeh đã cung cấp cho mọi người có thể dễ dàng sử dụng.

Bạn có thể sử dụng USB chứa hệ điều hành này và chạy trên hầu hết các máy tính, các tập tin sẽ không được lưu trữ trên ổ cứng như truyền thống.

Bánh tráng trứng nướng mỡ hành

Đây là một món ăn có xuất xứ từ miền Trung, được du nhập vào Đà Lạt và chỉ một thời gian ngắn sau đã trở thành một món ngon không thể thiếu trong những buổi “tám” và “măm măm” của teen Đà Lạt luôn. Qui trình chế biến món ăn này cũng rất kỳ công nhé. Đầu tiên, bánh tráng sẽ được nướng sơ qua trên bếp than hồng, sau đó là quét thêm một lớp mỡ hành, ruốc xào. Khi bánh tráng bắt đầu nở giòn, người bán sẽ quét thêm một lớp trứng gà/ trứng cút, rồi chờ đến khi bánh và trứng chín đều, cô thợ sẽ nhanh tay gập đôi chiếc bánh lại và cho ra đĩa. Công đoạn còn lại là của teen mình, trước khi “măm”, teen sẽ dùng kéo cắt bánh ra thành từng miếng nhỏ vừa ăn. Món này phải ăn nóng và ăn với tương ớt thì “ngon bá phát”.

Hồng Phúc (teen 12, Đống Đa, Đà Lạt) cho biết: “Giữa tiết trời lành lạnh, được ngồi túm tụm cùng bạn bè, vừa tha hồ trò chuyện, vừa măm măm món bánh tráng trứng mỡ hành nướng nóng giòn, cay cay thì không còn gì tuyệt bằng”.

Nếu bạn không muốn ăn bánh giòn, thì bạn có thể yêu cầu món bánh tráng trứng nướng mỡ hành dẻo (với tương ớt được cho trực tiếp vào công đoạn nướng), ăn dai dai cũng rất ngon đấy nhé.

À, giá của món này phải nói là cực rẻ luôn í, chỉ 2k/ cái thui. Chỉ cần bạn có trong túi 10k là đã có thể “chén” no bụng luôn, hì hì.

Bạn có thể ăn món này ở quanh bờ Hồ Xuân Hương và các con đường Vạn Kiếp, Bùi Thị Xuân và quanh khu chợ đêm Đà Lạt nhé.

Xắp xắp giòn giòn

Lần đầu tiên đến Đà Lạt, nghe mấy đứa bạn giới thiệu món này, tớ cũng hơi tò mò, nhưng khi thưởng thức món ăn này rồi, tớ mới phát hiện ra món này rất ngon nhé.

Thực ra, món này có cách chế biến khá giống với món gỏi khô bò ở miền Nam tụi mình, cũng với đu đủ bào sợi, khô bò, đậu phụng, nước chan, rau thơm. Nhưng đặc biệt là gia vị của món này ở Đà Lạt rất khác biệt, tạo nên một hương vị rất riêng, rất đặc trưng mà không nơi đâu có được.

“Vào buổi tối, mình và mấy đứa bạn thường hay rủ nhau ra khu chợ đêm thuê xe đạp đôi, rồi đạp vòng vòng bờ hồ chơi thỏa thích. Khi nào mệt thì ghé vào một xe xắp xắp và “chén” no bụng, rồi đạp tiếp, cũng vui và thú vị cự kỳ” - Mai Anh (Teen 11, Võ Thị Sáu, Đà Lạt).

Giá của món ăn này cũng tương đối “mềm”, khoảng 3-5k/đĩa (tùy nơi bán), bạn có thể tìm ăn tại rất nhiều nơi ở Đà Lạt luôn.

Chả ram bắp thơm ngon

Món này thì ngon khỏi phải nói luôn rồi, nếu bạn là một teen thích ăn vặt và “ghiền” các món chiên nóng nòng thì tớ bảo đảm là bạn sẽ “căng bụng” vì cứ ăn mãi món này mà quên luôn là mình đã no lúc nào không biết đấy. Một cuốn chả bắp chiên thường bao gồm bắp non quết nhuyễn, hành tím băm, nêm thêm gia vị, tiêu xay, rối cuộn trong một lớp bánh tráng mỏng, sau đó được chiên thật giòn trên dầu nóng cho đến khi giòn là được. Món này còn đặc biệt ngon ở chỗ là được ăn kèm với nước chấm là tương đậu phụng béo béo, có thịt xay rất vừa miệng, chính loại nước chấm độc đáo này đã tạo nên sự hấp dẫn của món ăn đó nhé.

Nhóm bạn Thắng – Long – Hoà – Lân (cùng là teen 10, Thăng Long) cho biết: “Món chả ram có bán rất nhiều nơi, nhưng bọn tớ thích nhất là ăn ở khu Nguyễn Công Trứ, vì chả ram ở đây khá ngon, mà giá lại rẻ, chỉ 4-5k/ đĩa hà!”

Do là thành phố của nhiều thành phần cư dân khác nhau và mỗi miền mang đến đây một chút "nỗi nhớ quê hương" nên ở Ðà Lạt có sự hội tụ của nhiều món ăn khác nhau, nhất là các món ăn dân dã.

Ăn sáng

Ngay tại khu Hòa Bình có các quán đã trở nên quen thuộc với người dân thành phố hoa như phở Tùng, phở - cơm tấm Bắc Hương (gần kế cà phê Tùng), bún bến xe Tùng Nghĩa (sau lưng khu Hòa Bình), phở Hiếu (kế bên khu Hòa Bình). Nhưng nếu ở các đường phố khác không gần trung tâm thì người dân Ðà Lạt thích ăn sáng ở Bún Thiên Trang (Hồ Tùng Mậu) phở Hoàng Văn Thụ, phở Quang (Hà Huy Tập), phở Hà Nội trên dốc đường Hải Thượng Lãn Ông. ở gần ngã tư Phan Chu Trinh thì nên đến phở Vi (góc Trần Quý Cáp với Nguyễn Du). Phở ở Ðà Lạt rẻ hơn (phở ngon chỉ từ 18.000đ - 20.000 đồng/tô) và "chén" đã hơn so với ăn ở nơi khác vì xứ lạnh ăn nóng khi tô phở đang bốc khói và vì có rau tươi, ngon.

Cà phê Thủy Tạ

Ðối với du khách ở TPHCM lên thì nhiều năm nay đã quen với quán bún 44 Hùng Vương (bà già tóc bạc) và một quán bún Huế khác là bún Công (nằm trên đường Phù Ðổng Thiên Vương - trên đường đến khu du lịch Thung lũng Tình yêu). Trước đây, món bún Công còn giữ được nét đặc trưng của Huế là rất cay nhưng dần dần để phù hợp với thị hiếu đã ít cay hơn nhưng nếu là bạn là người sành ăn cay thì nên dặn người phục vụ cho thêm ớt. Giá một tô bún Công là 18.000đ, tô đặc biệt 25.000đ nhưng quả là xứng "đồng tiền bát gạo" và du khách có thể ăn trưa bằng một tô bún đặc biệt là đủ.

Ðối với khách bình dân thích ăn mì Quảng thì nên đến Ấp Ánh Sáng (gần chợ Đà lạt) hoặc đường Nhà Chung - nơi có 2-3 quán mì Quảng ăn được và vào buổi sáng rất đắt khách (chủ yếu là dân Ðà Lạt đến ăn).

Nếu là người thích các món ăn Hoa thì du khách hãy ghé đến quán mì Hoành thánh, 217 đường Phan Ðình Phùng (gần ngã ba chùa Linh Sơn) hoặc quán Vĩnh Lợi ở cuối dốc Duy Tân du khách sẽ được phục vụ chu đáo. Buổi trưa, gần quán Như ý có quán ăn Tài Ký với các món cơm xào, vịt tiềm, óc heo tiềm, chân gà tiềm hấp dẫn để du khách tăng thêm sinh lực sau những lúc lên dốc, xuống đồi mệt nhọc. Từ buổi trưa, một quán Tài Ký khác ở đường Bùi Thị Xuân cũng đã mở cửa sẵn sàng phục vụ du khách sành ăn cho đến chiều. Giá một tiềm thuốc bắc ở Ðà Lạt khá rẻ: từ 45.000 - 75.000 đồng tùy theo món.

Nếu thích nơi yên tĩnh, có phong cảnh đẹp thì cũng có thể đến quán Bích Ðào (đường Triệu Việt Vương, ngay dốc lên dinh Bảo Ðại). Ở đây có phục vụ món Bò né chất lượng không thua kém các quán nổi tiếng ở TPHCM. Ăn sáng ở Bích Ðào có cái tiện là uống cà phê luôn tại chỗ và quán luôn sẵn các loại nhạc tuyển dành cho khách sành nhạc, nhất là nhạc cổ điển, hòa tấu.

Bánh canh Xuân An cũng trên đường Nhà Chung vào buổi chiều có món ăn đặc sản của Ðà Lạt là bánh canh Xuân An (số 15 Nhà Chung, ÐT: 827690). Quán bánh canh này đã là một địa chỉ quen thuộc của người dân thành phố hoa từ hàng chục năm nay và đã đến thế hệ thứ 2. Ðặc điểm khác biệt của bánh canh Xuân An so với bánh cánh các nơi khác là đậm đặc hơn, hơi béo hơn và có cả bánh canh giò. Quán 33 – chuyên bán ốc nhồi thịt (đường Hai Bà Trưng) khá nổi tiếng, ở đây có cả món bò nướng, lẩu đuôi bò rất ngon, giá cả hợp lý.

Ăn trưa

Ðối với các du khách đi đoàn lớn, thích ăn uống theo kiểu bình dân vừa hợp khẩu vị, vừa rẻ tiền thì không còn chỗ nào lý tưởng hơn bằng ở hàng ăn trên chợ lầu Ðà Lạt. ở đây có đầy đủ các món ẩm thực bình dân như bún, cháo đến cơm, phở, bánh cuốn... với giá rất bình dân 10.000đ - 20.000đ/đĩa. Ở đây cũng có cả các món cơm, phở chay phục vụ các khách đi hành hương với chất lượng tương đương đồ mặn nhưng giá cả có rẻ hơn. Hay quanh chợ Ðà Lạt cũng có một vài quán cơm bình dân phục vụ cơm trưa với giá 15.000 đồng - 20.000 đồng/bữa.

Du khách cũng có thể dạo quanh khu vực bến xe Tùng Nghĩa (góc đường Nguyễn Văn Trỗi và Phan Bội Châu để tìm đến các quán ăn "rất bình dân" dành cho người lao động với giá 15.000 đồng/đĩa cơm và 20.000 đồng/phần.

Nếu đi xe từ 12 chỗ trở xuống đến nhóm 3 - 4 người muốn ăn cơm "công chức" thì chịu khó tạt xuống đường Hùng Vương sau Phòng Cảnh sát giao thông có 1 quán cơm luôn đông khách vào buổi trưa phục vụ công chức và người lao động. Ði quá 200m cũng có 3 quán cơm bình dân khác mà khá nhất là quán Hà. Giá một phần cơm ở đây chỉ từ 15.000đ - 25.000đ với 3 món hẳn hoi là canh, rau và món mặn. Ðiểm đặc biệt ở các quán ăn trên đường Hùng Vương này là đều có món dưa, cà pháo và mắm nêm.

Ðối với du khách ở các khách sạn trên đường 3 tháng 2, Nguyễn Văn Cừ, Hải Thượng Lãn Ông có thể đến quán cơm bình dân dành cho người lao động ở góc đường Nguyễn Văn Cừ - 3/2 với giá 17.000 đồng/đĩa.

Sang trọng hơn thì đã có các nhà hàng ở ngay đường vào chợ như Nam Ðô (824550), Như Ngọc (3822651), Hải Sơn (3827252) đều ở ngay đường vào chợ Ðà Lạt và một số nhà hàng ở đường Phan Ðình Phùng như nhà hàng Cẩm Ðô (81Phan Ðình Phùng, 3822732), nhà hàng Tân Huê Ðô (số 27/2 đường Hoàng Diệu, 3826848).

Quán Tân Huê Ðô có món dê giả cầy thuộc loại nhất, nhì phố núi và giá cả cũng thuộc loại vừa vừa phải chăng. Trước đây quán ở đường Phan Ðình Phùng, từ ngày dời về đường Hoàng Diệu dù trong hẻm vẫn đắt khách hàng nhờ giá cả và chất lượng. Hoặc du khách có thể ghé nhà hàng Vạn Huê Lầu số 22/2 Trần Phú (3824794) với vị trí khá đẹp lại có Karaoke sân khấu cùng đội ngũ tiếp viên trẻ đẹp lịch sự.

Một địa chỉ rất quen thuộc của giới ẩm thực, nhất là khách nước ngoài (khách "ba lô") là nhà hàng Long Hoa (số 6 đường 3/2, 3822934) và Nhà hàng Thanh Thanh (Số 4 Tăng Bạt Hổ, 3821836 - 3829158). Cả hai nhà hàng này đều nằm ngay khu trung tâm Hòa Bình.

Muốn ăn cơm niêu cùng các món ăn Nam Bộ thì đến Như Ngọc 2, số 19/8 Hồ Tùng Mậu (3833999) sau lưng Bưu điện trung tâm Ðà Lạt) với một vị trí đẹp nhìn ra khu trung tâm chợ và với các cô phục vụ áo bà ba duyên dáng.

Muốn thưởng thức các món nướng thì hãy đến quán Sapa 5 Hải Thượng, (3835760). ở đây có hàng chục món nướng với cách ướp gia vị mang âm hưởng vùng núi phía bắc Sapa , giá cả cũng không quá mắc. Buổi sáng, tại đây cũng có phục vụ ăn sáng nhẹ. Phòng ốc được thiết kế theo kiểu nhà sàn cách điệu của vùng núi Tây Bắc và Tây Nguyên.

Một điểm ăn trưa và ăn tối không thể không nhắc đến là quán ăn Như Ý ở số 143B đường Phan Đình Phùng, (3823770). Nếu từ khu Hòa Bình chỉ cần xuôi dốc Trương Công Định là đến. Các món ăn ở đây khá đa dạng (có thể kêu phần và kêu món), chất lượng khá, giá cả vừa phải và đã được du khách các tỉnh “chấm” từ nhiều năm nay.

Đối với các du khách muốn “lai rai” tí chút với bạn bè thì nên chọn món lẩu dê” để được thưởng thức các món rau xanh của Đà Lạt. Rẻ nhất, chất lượng nhất là quán dê Ngân (số 32C Hai Bà Trưng (3823808), sau đó là quán Phú với các món dê trên đường Hoàng Diệu hay một số quán nhậu bình dân ở đường Lê Quý Đôn (khu Ba Toa, cách chợ Đà Lạt hơn 1 km (và rất gần phía đường 3 tháng 2, Nguyễn Văn Cừ). Chỉ với 50.000 đồng – 80.000 đồng, đã có làm một buổi hàn huyên cho 3 – 4 người (không tính tiền rượu, bia), hoặc Hoàng Tèo (đường Trần Lê)…

Nếu ở khu vực gần hồ Than Thở, gần ngã tư Phan Chu Trinh thì nên đến quán dê ở số 05 Hồ Xuân Hương ((3824197), đây là quán đã có thâm niên với các món dê, rượu tiết dê nhưng giá có “cứng” hơn một chút.

Một món ăn có thể gọi là đặc sản thứ thiệt của Đà Lạt không thể quên là món Atisô hầm giò heo. Đây là loại thuốc bổ, loại món ăn có tác dụng như một loại thần dược sẽ giúp du khách ngủ ngon, lợi tiểu, mát gan tăng thêm sức khỏe khi nghỉ dưỡng tại Đà Lạt. Nhưng món này chỉ có ở các nhà hàng và chỉ ngon khi vào trúng mùa Atisô (từ Nôen đến đầu mùa hè năm sau).

Ở Đà Lạt, muốn dùng hải sản tươi sống thì đã có nhà hàng Sông Hồng (Phan Chu Trinh), đây là một trong số ít nhà hàng chuyên phục vụ các món hải sản tươi sống.

Đối với khách thích món nướng có thể đến nhà hàng Sapa (5 Hải Thượng, ( : 3835760), ở đây có phục vụ món cơm lam truyền thống của người Thái vùng Tây Bắc.

Ăn khuya

Sau một ngày đi tham quan dã ngoại và sau một buổi tối đi dạo bên bờ hồ Xuân Hương, du khách cần ăn khuya một chút có thể ghé qua hẻm ấp Ánh Sáng ở ngay bờ hồ để tìm một tô bún Huế cay cay (20.000 đồng/tô) vì dân ở hẻm này đại đa số là người Huế) và một số món khác như cháo vịt, mì Quảng.

Ngay cạnh khu Hòa Bình (hẻm đường Tăng Bạt Hổ) cũng có các quán phở ăn được phục vụ người dân Đà Lạt và du khách đến 12 giờ đêm. Đà Lạt là thành phố vườn đặc thù nên các quán ăn thường đóng cửa sớm hơn các nơi khác, do đó chắc ăn nhất là nên đến xung quanh khu Hòa Bình.

Nếu ăn phở thì ghé vào đường Tăng Bạt Hổ có 2 tiệm phở lớn mở cửa rất khuya; có hôm tới 2 giờ khuya vẫn còn bán. Nếu thích ăn miến gà thì nên đến đường Nguyễn Chí Thanh - Quán miến gà này chỉ bán vào ban đêm và được dân Đà Lạt rất tín nhiệm hoặc miến gà Tường Vy (Huyền Trân Công Chúa)- quán này khá nổi tiếng, trước đây ở đường Nguyễn Chí Thanh đã chuyển về địa chỉ này.

Đêm Đà Lạt thường rất lạnh, đặc biệt là vào dịp đầu và cuối năm nên rất ít quán mở cửa suốt đêm, ngoại trừ khu “chợ ăn”. Có lẽ do đặc điểm này nên người ta đặt cho nó cái tên chợ Âm phủ.

Uống cà phê ở đâu?

Có thừa quá không khi đặt ra câu hỏi này khi hầu như quanh thành phố đều có thể gọi được một ly cà phê ? Xin thưa đối với dân nghiền cà phê thì không thừa bởi đối với người hay uống cà phê chất lượng, giá cả, vị trí luôn được nhắm tới.

Thường du khách luôn có sở thích được ở gần, được đi chơi ở khu trung tâm Đà Lạt nên phần đông cũng thích uống cà phê sáng hay tối ở quanh khu trung tâm Hòa Bình. Ở các đường gần chợ Đà Lạt như Nguyễn Chí Thanh, Phan Bội Châu, Trương Công Định hay Nguyễn Văn Trỗi đều có khá nhiều quán cóc dành cho dân lao động Đà Lạt, đặc biệt là khu vực quanh bến xe Tùng Nghĩa (gồm đầu 2 đường Phan Bội Châu và Nguyễn Văn Trỗi.

“Phố cà phê”. Đối với người thích có vị trí đẹp để ngắm trời đất Đà Lạt (có lẽ phù hợp với phần đông du khách) thì không lý tưởng bằng dãy quán cà phê lưng chừng dốc lên khu Hòa Bình (một mặt quay bên đường Nguyễn Chí Thanh). Giá cả dao động ở mức 7.000 đồng/một ly cà phê đen và 10 .000- 15.000 đồng/ly cà phê sữa. Các loại nước uống cũng nhích hơn một chút do tiền chi phí mặt bằng cao. (giá ngày lễ và dịp đông khách có thể tăng thêm chút).

Một góc cà phê Cung Tơ Chiều

Trong ký ức của người yêu Đà Lạt và lên Đà Lạt nhiều lần có lẽ không thể quên được quán cà phê Tùng nằm ở ngay khu Hòa Bình chỉ phục vụ với một loại nhạc cổ điển, hòa tấu dành cho người sành nhạc lại sành cà phê. Chất lượng cà phê ở đây đã được khẳng định từ cách đây hàng chục năm. Du khách nước ngoài cũng hay ghé vào quán này (khách sành cà phê).

Vào ban đêm, nếu muốn có một không gian lý tưởng nữa, du khách có thể ghé quán Đà Lạt night (sau lưng bến xe Phương Trang) để ngắm toàn cảnh Đà Lạt về đêm, quán cà phê Nhật Nguyên (ngay đầu cầu Ông Đạo) ngắm phố phường vào đêm, hay quán cà phê Violet ngày thứ tư ở trên đường Trần Hưng Đạo…

Hay du khách cũng có thể đến quán Cung Tơ Chiều, nằm ngay trên ngọn đồi phía cổng Dinh III để thưởng thức chút lạ của Đà Lạt cùng chị chủ quán có giọng hát và phong cách “hơi quái”.

Nếu muốn có cảm giác mạnh hơn nữa, khách có thể ghé vào 2 nhà hàng bên bờ hồ Xuân Hương là Thủy Tạ và Thanh Thủy. Ở đây sẽ có món “Cà phê run” khi ngồi ngoài trời vào nửa buổi chiều trở về khuya (run vì lạnh). Đặc biệt lưu ý du khách là do có vị trí “chiến lược” đẹp, diện tích lại nhỏ nên giá cả ở 2 nhà hàng này, nhất là Thủy Tạ có cứng hơn nhiều so với ở ngoài. Nhưng bù lại, vào 2 tối trong tuần nhà hàng Thủy Tạ có phục vụ du khách món “âm nhạc dân tộc” do chính một số nghệ sĩ của Đà Lạt trực tiếp biểu diễn. Hoặc du khách có thể yêu cầu được nghe đàn dương cầm.

The idea of any time line is to present developments in a particular field as a continuum, a cascade of inevitability leading up to the present. A closer look at our highlights from computer history will show this long and winding road to have been traveled in fits and starts. What if Pascal hadn't gotten religion and retreated from science? Or if Babbage had completed his Analytical Engine? Or if Konrad Zuse had been able to get all the spare parts he needed? We'll never know whether the flow of computer developments would have been greatly accelerated. The course of computer history does, after all, seem inevitable.

1642

In France, mathematics genius Blaise Pascal devises the first true calculating machine. Using eight rotating gears and wheels, the Pascaline performs addition and subtraction.

1679

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, German philosopher, historian and scientist, perfects the binary system of notation. In a few centuries this system of is and Os will prove invaluable in machine computations.

1801

French silk weaver JosephMarie Jacquard invents a loom with punched cardboard cards for controlling woven patterns. The Jacquard loom modernizes the textile industry and will become the model for Babbage's use of punched cards.

1822

In London, Charles Babbage begins work on his Difference Engine, a calculating machine that performs mathematical functions (with sines, cosines and logarithms) to six decimal places. The hundreds of gears, shafts and counters weigh two tons. Seventy yearslater William Burroughs will use these principles in constructing the first successful adding machines.

1833

Babbage designs the first general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine, to which the modern computer bears a remarkable resemblance. The Engine has five parts: the mill, or calculating unit, the store (memory), an input device, a control section and a printer. The input and the control section are fed by punched cards.

1842

Babbage's friend Lady Augusta Ada Lovelace documents his major work in her "Observations on Mr. Babbage's Analytical Engine." She will also write the first program, streamlining operations with such instructions as "Here follows a repetition of operations 13 to 23.

1847

With two landmark theses, English mathematician George Boole sets up a system called Boolean algebra,, wherein logical problems are solved like algebraic problems. Boole's theories will form the bedrock of computer science.

1855

The first computer prize, a gold medal, is awarded at the Paris Exhibition to the Scheutz Difference Engine. Swedish engineer Georg Scheutz devised this simplified version of Babbage's machine after reading Lady Lovelace's "Observations." By this time painfully frustrated with his own slow progress, Babbage is in the audience when the medal is awarded to the younger inventor.

1859

The Registrar's Office in England commissions a Scheutz Difference Engine for calculating actuarial tables to predict life expectancy. This is the first use of the new technology by a government agency.

1890

Dr. Herman Hollerith completes the first electromechanical counting machine, the Hollerith tabulator, in which punched cards are used in data processing for the first time.

The U.S. government buys the Hollerith tabulator to compute the census. The machine completes the job in just 6 weeks as against previous 10-year preparation periods. (The U.S. population is 62,622,250.)

1895

Charles Fey, a young mechanic, opens arcade history by creating the slot machine. For $20 he sells the "Liberty Bell" to a San Francisco saloon, where it sits on the bar, accepts and pays out nickels, and is a huge success. (Symbols are bells, horseshoes, hearts, diamonds, spades and one star.)

1896

Herman Hollerith forms the Tabulating Machine Company to accommodate the demand for his counting machines. Eventually, the firm will take on a new identity as the Computing Tabulating and Recording Company (CTR).

1913

Thomas J. Watson leaves National Cash Register, where he coined his legendary THINK slogan, to assume presidency of the now ailing CTR.

1924

With Watson at the helm, Hollerith's fledgling finally emerges as IBM (International Business Machines).

1925

The "modern era of computation" begins at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where electrical engineer Vannevar Bush and colleagues devise a large-scale analog calculator. Though mostly mechanical, the calculator has electric motors that store number values as voltages in its thermionic tubes. For this invention, some consider Bush the true father of computing.

Bell Laboratories is founded in Murray Hill, N.J.

1935

In Germany, inventor Konrad Zuse decides to use the binary system in his computer designs. The binary numbers calculate much faster than decimals.

1936

English mathematician Alan M. Turing publishes his "On Computable Numbers," one of the single most important papers in the development of computer science.

Zuse designs the Z1, a computer with keyboard input, mechanical switches for storing numbers, and a row of light bulbs to flash answers. The Z1 can store instructions and is thus the first working stored program computer.

1938

In Germany, Helmut Schreyer receives his doctoral thesis in engineering for demonstrating how electronic vacuum tubes can be used as basic units for ultra-high-speed digital computers.

1939

Hewlett-Packard is founded in Palo Alto, Calif.

1940

George Stibitz rents a telephone link from Dartmouth to his computer at Bell Labs in New Jersey and demonstrates long-distance computing in an address to the Dartmouth Mathematical Society in Hanover, N. H.

1942

Vannevar Bush completes his second model of the analog calculator, subsequently used to help devise artillery firing tables for the U.S. government.

1943

Colossus, the world's first electronic computer, begins operations in December at Bletchley Park in England. Designed by Alan Turing and a team of scientists to decipher the signals of the German code machine Enigma, Colossus will help win the war for the Allies.

To help the war effort, math professor Grace Murray Hopper enters the U.S. Naval Reserve and embarks on the first modern programming career. Upon graduation, she is assigned to the Bureau of Ordnance Computation Project at Harvard.

1944

The Harvard Mark I, designed primarily by Prof. Howard Aiken (with funding by Thomas Watson and IBM), launches today's computer industry. The Mark I is the world's first fully automatic computer and the first machine to fulfill Babbage's dream. 1945

In wartime Germany, unable to obtain material for circuits to control his computers, Konrad Zuse creates the first programming language, Plankalkul, for both numerical and nonnumerical problems.

In America, John von Neumann posits his five characteristics of computing: 1) fully electronic execution, 2) the binary number system, 3) an internal memory, 4) a stored program, and 5) universality i.e., a machine that can perform more than one task.

1946

Electrical engineer J. Presper Eckert and physicist John Mauchly complete the first programmable electronic computer, ENIAC, at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering.

Eckert and Mauchly form the first commercial computer firm, the Electronic Control Company (later the Eckert-Mauchly Corporation), to manufacture electronic computers.

1947

Bell Labs scientists John Bardeen, Walter Houser Brattain and William Bradford Shockley revolutionize the young computer industry by inventing the transistor,

1949

M.I.T.'s Claude Shannon switches on computer game history when he demonstrates how to outline problems using game-playing machines, then builds a chessplaying machine called Caissac.

EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Computer) makes its first calculation on May 6. Built by Maurice Wilkes at Cambridge University, England, EDSAC performs one computation in three milliseconds. Wilkes is the first inventor to have a subroutine libraryin mind while designing a computer.

1950

On an 8x8 board, Alan Turing writes the first computer program to simulate chess

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., writes about "EPICAC" in one of the first love stories involving a computer.

The American military begins to use computers to simulate operations in its "war games."

1951

The first nonspecialist computer magazine, Computers and People (originally titled Computers and Automation), comes on the market.

John Pinkerton completes the first business computer, LEO, for Lyons Teashop Company in England. LEO will be used for administrative purposes, not for calculating.

Eckert and Mauchly complete UNIVAC I (Universal Automatic Computer), the first computer specifically designed for commercial operations, and deliver it to the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the 1950 census.

While working on UNIVAC I, Grace Hopper meets the need for faster programming by devising a set of instructions that tells the machine how to convert its language into symbolic code. This is the A-O compiler, the first of its kind.

1952

IBM, the world's largest purveyor of punched card office machines, shifts to the manufacture of electronic computers.

John Diebold's "Automation: The Advent of the Factory" leads off the string of studies that will explore the computer's impact on employment and leisure time.

1954

FORTRAN is born, through a paper titled "Specifications for the IBM Mathematical Formula Translating System, FORTRAN," written by IBM's Programming Research Group.

1955

At RCA Labs in Princeton, N.J., Harry Olson and Herbert Belar complete the RCA Electronic Music Synthesizer, the first of its kind.

M.I. T.'s Whirlwind I introduces the first computer graphics: primitive interactive line drawings on two display consoles.

The first formal computer user group, SHARE, meets in the basement of Rand Corporation headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif. The members, including government, research, aviation and computer organizations, gather to exchange "homegrown" software in the absence of instructions for the IBM 704.

1956

The 45-mile stretch of high-tech creativity known as Silicon Valley etches itself on the landscape of California's Santa Clara Valley.

Bardeen, Brattain and Shockley receive the Nobel Prize for their invention of the transistor. Shockley, who had left Bell Labs in 1955, founds Shockley Transistor Corporation, one of the first of the Silicon Valley firms. Engineers from Shockley Transistor will form their own major electronics firms, such as Fairchild Semiconductor.

1957

At his marriage in Amsterdam, programming expert Edsgar Dijkstra fills in his profession on the license as "programer." Finding this unacceptable on the grounds that no such profession exists, city authorities erase his entry and sub stitute "theoretical physicist."

Lejaren Hiller arranges the first computercomposed music, Illiac Suite for String Quartet.

In Maynard, Mass., Ken Olsen starts Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) as a mail-order parts business.

1958

Computer firms spring up along Route 128, north of Boston.

Texas Instruments' Jack St. Kilby develops the first working model of the integrated circuit.

At Control Data Corporation, Seymour Cray designs the CDC 1604, the first fully transistorized supercomputer.

1959

At Fairchild Semiconductor, Robert Noyce and Jean Hoerni develop the planar process, in which circuit components are interconnected by photoengraving on a flat, polished wafer, usually silicon. With integrated circuits, computers grow smaller and much more powerful.

CODASYL (Committee on Data Systems Languages), representing government, military and industry, meets to decide on a common language for business data processing. COBOL, for Common Business Oriented Language, is published within months, whereupon the Defense Department stipulates that all its suppliers must use the language.

1960

The term "software" becomes widely accepted throughout the computer industry.

1961

The National Institutes of Health Clinic Center in Bethesda, Md., implements the first computerized patientmonitoring system.

1962

Dr. Edward O. Thorp's best-selling Beat the Dealer describes using a computer to work out the odds at blackjack. Thorpe's system is so successful that several casinos bar him from the game.

Disk file storage is initiated with the IBM 1440 series. The 14-inch disks look like phonograph records, are arranged in stacks of six and store three million characters.

With a $30 million investment and an IBM 9090, American Airlines launches SABRE, the first computerized airline reservation system. One of the largest commercial data bases in operation, SABRE allows customers to book reservations and rent cars. By 1968 it will handle over 100,000 calls per day from passengers, travel agents and other airlines.

Ivan Sutherland, a doctoral candidate at M. I. T.'s Lincoln Laboratory, designs Sketchpad, a linedrawing system for draftsmen. Using a cathode ray display tube, the system features an electronic stylus, or light pen, to display calculations at any stage of design. Soon after, another M.I.T. researcher, Timothy Johnson, develops a collateral program to display three-dimen- sional drawings.

1963

M.I.T.'s Dr. Joseph Weizenbaum develops Eliza, a program that simulates conversation between psychotherapist and patient.

General Motor; Research Labs produces the first computerdesigned auto part: the trunk lid for 1965 Cadillacs. The computer system is DAC-1 (Design Augmented by Computer), whose screen displays an image that can be modified with a light pen.

After more than 73,000 hours of steadfast service, UNIVAC I is retired to the Smithsonian Institution.

1964

Sara Lee, maker of frozen pastries, becomes the first fully automated factory. The Deerfield, Ill., plant uses a Honeywell 610 computer to change equipment speeds and oven temperatures and to determine what products are needed in filling orders.

In Texas v. Hancock a programmer who stole his employer's computer software, worth about $5 million, is convicted and sentenced to five years. This constitutes the first computer crime leading to criminal prosecution.

1965

On May 1, at four A.M. in a room at Dartmouth College, John Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz run their first program in BASIC (Beginners' All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) for non professional computer users.

Harris-Intertype Corporation introduces three models of a computer designed specifically for typesetting. All of them justify automatically, and the top-end version offers near-perfect hyphenation.

Several Wall Street firms turn to computers for securities analysis and accounting.

DEC produces the first "mini" computer, incorporating many features of a large computer but with smaller storage capacity and a slower processing speed.

Schools begin to use computers for science simulation, math quizzes and educational games.

1966

In the first federal case involving criminal use of computers, U.S. v. Bennett, a bank programmer is convicted of adjusting a computer to ignore all his overdraft checks.

Operation Match, one of the early computer dating services, opens in Cambridge, Mass.

Texas Instruments unveils the first solid-state hand-held calculator. It has no electronic display, but prints out answers on a strip of heat-sensitive paper.

1967

The chess-playing MacHack IV is entered by Richard Greenblatt in the Massachusetts state championship, becoming the first program to compete successfully against human chess players.

Computerworld, one of the most comprehensive weekly newspapers geared to the computer industry, begins publication.

1968

The movie 2001: A Space Odyssey plays across the country, introducing the mutinous computer HAL.

W. Carlos' Switched-On Bach, an album of fugues, preludes and two-part inventions played on a Moog Synthesizer, is a big hit.

Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce leave Fairchild Semiconductor to form Intel (Integrated Electronics) Corporation.

1969

M.E. Hoff, Jr., a young engineer at Intel, takes charge of the Busicom project involving the manufacture of chips for a Japanese calculator firm. His improvements on the design result in a central processing unit of 2,250 microminiaturized transistors on a chip less than 1/6" long and 1/8" wide. The Intel 4004 is the first micro computer.

1970

Ralph Baer, a division manager at Sanders Associates in New Hampshire, originates the home video game when he develops an electronic unit with hand controls that sends broadcast signals to a TV set.

1971

Magnavox buys the patent rights to Baer's TV/hand-control invention, then sells the sublicensing rights to Atari and other manufacturers.

Left with a stock of unsold chips, Intel puts the 4004 microprocessor in its catalog. To everyone's surprise, the chip takes the industry by storm and paves the way for most of the advances of the decade.

1972

IBM announces the System/32, a desk-size unit that contains all the computer hardware.

Intel develops the 8008 microprocessor, originally designed for the Display Terminal Corporation (now Datapoint) CRT. The 8008 ultimately satisfies all customer requirements except in the area of speed.

In a move to reduce clutter and clatter in the newsroom, the Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle and Herald install CRTs for use in writing and editing stories.

Atari founder Nolan Bushnell invents and markets Pong, considered by many the first milestone in video game history.

Diablo Systems of Hayward, Calif., develops the first automatic printer for data processing systems. The "daisy wheel" Hytype Printer I features a glass-reinforced nylon disk and can print 30 characters per second; integrated circuits do much of the work.

The Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, are the first games to use computers as "primary" judges of times and finishes. The computer companies involved are Gebr. Junghams GMBH and Compagnie de Montres Longines Francillon S. A.

1973

The National Computer Conference is held at the New York Coliseum June 4-8, replacing the fall and spring joint conferences.

Intel turns out the 8008 microprocessor, which is 20 times faster than the original 4004 chip.

Shugart Associates of Sunnyvale, Calif., ships its first 8" floppy disks. Replacing punched cards as a data entry medium, the reusable plastic/ oxide disks weigh less than two ounces and store programs and files.

Truong Trong Thi, a Frenchman of Vietnamese origin, introduces the first commercially available microcomputer system, based on the Intel 8008, but fails to secure adequate distribution.

1974

The July cover story of Radio-Electronics magazine tells how to "Build the Mark-8, Your Personal Minicomputer" (with an Intel 8008 microprocessor).

Computer magazines now range from Computer Law and Tax Reporter, which documents legal battles in data processing, to Creative Computing, one of the first magazines devoted to recreational use of computers.

In the first experiment with bank computer terminals, two branches of the Lincoln, Neb., Hinky Dinky grocery chain install computer terminals for bank deposits and withdrawals. In six weeks First Federal Savings & Loan takes in 672 new accounts.

Two leading designers at Intel leave to form Zilog, another microprocessing firm. They develop the Z80 chip, which competes directly with Intel's new 8080.

1975

The January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics features a cover story on the MITS Altair, the first widely available personal computer.

In a five-week period, Harvard student William Gates and associate Paul Allen adapt BASIC to fit the microcomputer. Having wrested the new computers from the hands of a small group of assembly language programmers, they form Microsoft to market their version of the language.

Objective Design of Tallahassee, Fla., offers Encounter, the first commercial personal computer game, in assembly language on paper tape.

1976

The New York Times starts to convert to electronic editing and typesetting on a Harris 2550 system.

With a surplus of calculator chips, Commodore enters the personal computer market through MOS (metal oxide semiconductor) technology.

The first Adventure game is programmed by Crowther and Wood at Princeton University.

The number of computer magazines grows to include Byte: The Small Systems Journal (aimed at the "personal computer" amateur and professional), the quarterly Computer Graphics and Art, and Dr. Dobb's Journal of Computer Calisthenics and Orthodontia for the microcomputer hobbyist.

1977

Storage systems become smaller, more powerful and more convenient. Micropolis Corporation of Northridge, Calif., announces the Metafloppy, a family of integrated 51/4' floppy disk systems with the storage capacity of 8" disks.

The newsweekly Computerworld begins a Microcomputing section to handle the flood of information on micros.

Apple markets the Apple II, ultimately to become the personal computer equivalent of the Volkswagen.

Radio Shack unveils its fully assembled microcomputer, the TRS-80 Model 1, with keyboard, CRT and cassette unit. The whole system, which offers some graphics and can be programmed in BASIC, sells for $599.95.

CRTs come under suspicion when two New York Times copy editors are diagnosed as having cataracts. Tested for radiation, the machines are ultimately cleared. This is the first of many complaints linking eye irritations and CRTs

Commodore International, enters the personal computer field with PET (personal electronic transactor).

ComputerLand, among the largest of today's computer retailers, opens its first store.

Originally developed for computerized astrology machines, CP/M (control program for microcomputers) is offered by Gary Kildall and his Digital Research Company. CPM will soon become a standard for business applications on personal computers.

1978

Fed up with time-consuming projections using a calculator and spreadsheet, first-year Harvard Business School student Daniel Bricklin teams up with Robert Frankston at M.I.T. to create VisiCalc, an electronic spreadsheet that can recalculate all related numbers when one variable changes. They pool their finance. and with $16,000 found Software Arts in Wellesley, Mass.

Seymour Rubenstein, formerly of IMSAI, founds MicroPro International and commissions John Barnaby to write the word processing program that will become WordStar.

Texas Instruments produces its Speak & Spell toy, the first widespread offering of digital speech synthesis.

Epson America in Anaheim, Calif, introduces its 80-column dot-matrix printer, which becomes a runaway best seller.

1979

Personal Software markets VisiCalc, soon called the "smash hit of software." The first version works only on the Apple II and thus boosts that computer's sales. VisiCalc is credited with taking micros out of the home and making them "serious."

Publisher Adam Osborne sells his company to McGraw-Hill and founds Osborne Computer in Hayward, Calif.

Video games appear everywhere: in restaurants, gas stations, bars. With threatening names like Centipede and Space Invaders, the quarter-gobbling dwarfs cause concern among parents.

The Source offers an electronic service enabling home computer owners to read newspapers, get stock info, check airline schedules and browse through restaurant guides. Similar services will include CompuServe and Dow Jones News/Retrieval.

1980

Shugart Associates markets the 5 1/2" Winchester disk drive, which stores 30 times as much data as a standard small floppy and transfers the information 20 times faster.

Texas Instruments unveils its first personal computer, the TI 99/4, based on a 16-bit processor and list-priced at $1,200. With modifications and aggressive marketing, this computer eventually lists for $99 before almost bankrupting the company.

Radio Shack introduces the TRS-80 Color Computer for recreation and education.

1981

Four eighth graders at Manhattan's private Dalton School use its terminals to link up with other computers. By trial and error, they gain entry into several Canadian companies' computers, temporarily destroying certain data and preventing legitimate users from accessing the systems. The FBI and Royal Canadian Mounted Police join forces and catch the 13year-olds after a week of their long-distance raids. No charges are pressed despite a loss of several thousand dollars' worth of computer time

Commodore introduces the VIC-20, destined to be the first home computer model to sell more than one million units. Waiting in the wings is the more powerful Commodore 64, the first popularly priced machine to have 64K of memory built in.

Osborne Computer unveils the Osborne 1, the first portable micro. Its 24 pounds hold a disk operating system that can handle word processing and electronic spreadsheets.

Zork, a "second-generation" adventure game capable of responding to complex sentences, is introduced by Infocom. Originally written in a proprietary language on a minicomputer, the game is quickly converted by Infocom into versions for virtually every popular personal computer model.

The six-yearold personal computer industry passes the $1.5 billion mark.

At ENIAC's thirty-fifth birthday celebration in Philadelphia, the trail-blazing machine is pitted against a Radio Shack TRS-80 and commanded to square all integers from 1 to 10,000. The young micro wins handily, completing the exercise in a third of a second vs. ENIAC's six seconds.

Computer camps become popular among kids (and some adults).

Watchmaker Timex Inc. contracts with England's Clive Sinclair to market Timex/Sinclair 1000, the first fully assembled under$100 computer in the U.S.

The IBM PC debuts, with a memory that can store more than 250 pages of data and a system that can complete about 700,000 additions per second. The PC is as powerful as anything on the market, which shifts dramatically toward the industry's giant.

IBM chooses Microsoft's MSDOS operating system for its PC. When other hardware manufacturers hop on the IBMcompatible bandwagon, MS-DOS becomes the new standard for business applications programs.

In a lean Christmas shopping season, computer video games (with TV hook-ups) are huge hits. The favorites are Intellivision and Atari.

1982

According to a study by Prof. Sanford Weinberg of St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia, at least 30 percent of daily users of computers have some degree of "cyberphobia," or fear of computers. Victims range from high blood pressure sufferers to the policeman who shot the computer console in his car. Another Weinberg study shows cyberphiliacs (compulsive computer programmers) to be no better off: they are usually friendless and single.

Jimmy Carter becomes the first former President to write his memoirs with a word processor. Like many tyro computer users, he hits a wrong key and deletes an entire chapter.

As the video game craze reaches fever pitch, 15-yearold Steve Juraszek of Arlington Heights, Ill., plays Defender for 16 hours, 34 minutes, on the same quarter. His score: 15,963,100.

For its annual "Man of the Year" issue, Time magazine features the computer on its cover.

Over 17,000 software packages are now available to run on Apple computers.

1983

Lotus 1-2-3, the first integrated software package for personal computers, hits the market. Lotus founder Mitchell D. Kapor packaged an electronic spreadsheet, information management and graphics on one 5 1/4" disk.

Radio Shack brings out a book-size computer: the Radio Shack' 100. The tiny machine weighs about four pounds, has built-in word processing and communications software, and costs just under $800. Other companies quickly following with book-size computers are Sharp and Nippon, taking advantage of the power and size made possible by CMOS chips.

Apple puts out the Lisa 32bit Motorola 68000 microprocessor-based computer featuring high-res graphics, onscreen windows for multi-program use and a mouse for controlling cursor position and data entry. The initial $10,000 offering price is prohibitive, but Lisa establishes the state of the art for personal computers.

Computerized burglaries become so popular among teens that the FBI conducts a huge "sting" operation to round up micro-criminals in 13 cities. (Computers in brokerage houses, hospitals and the Defense Department had been raided mostly through GTE's Telenet, based in Vienna, Va. ) Word of the FBI crackdown is flashed to other hackers across the country via computer bulletin boards.

Less than two years after introducing inexpensive portable computers, Osborne files for reorganization under chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy law. In the highly competitive microcomputer market, other high-tech firms founder. Texas Instruments and Mattel leave the home computer business, eventually followed by Timex.

New York's Chemical Bank makes the first large-scale launch of a home banking system. Its Pronto service is soon offered through 200 banks across the U.S.

Hewlett-Packard unveils the HP-150, the first personal computer to offer a touch screen.

President Ronald Reagan helps unemployed steelworker Ronald D. Bricker get his first job interview in a year. Bricker goes to work as computer repair technician for Radio Shack, realizes he is earning less than if he were collecting unemployment insurance and gladly returns to the steel mill when his old job becomes available.

A Korean Airlines Boeing 747 with 269 people on board is shot down by a Russian fighter plane for straying into Soviet air space. Western aviation experts blame a one-digit human error by the crew in programming the plane's navigational computer-enough to account for its being 300 miles off course.

The movie WarGames, in which a young hacker gains entry to a Defense Department computer and plays "global thermonuclear war," explores the adolescent fantasy of possessing ultimate power in the adult world.

VisiCorp and Software Arts sue each other over marketing rights to the pioneering program in a move that could reflect an end to the cooperative era in the software industry.

George Orwell's 1984, thought by many to be a prophetic indictment of the computer age, is found to contain no mention of computers.

As competition heats up, commercial TV becomes a battleground for the personal computer wars. Apple and Kaypro ads go on to win "Cleos", the "Oscars" of TV commericals.

Apple signals a new generation of personal computers with its powerful, compact Macintosh, whose 3 1/2" disks store more than the 5 1/4" disks used in most micros. With its mouse and pull-down menus and windows, it is truly "Lisa for the masses."

Computer magazine titles reach 450, the largest number ever devoted to a single subject. An ensuing shakeout decimates the ranks of computer publications.

“Hi Simone and friends,
It’s a great pleasure to have been selected as a winner of the competition of IELTS scores.
Your blog is doing a great job in helping all those who are preparing for the terrifying (many times) IELTS. I wrote it twice – the first time was two years back. Now I took it again, since the validity of my previous result expired. Got 6.5 in speaking this time, but increased to 7.0 by remarking, the overall score was 7.5: Listening 7.5, Reading 7.5, Writing 7.5, Speaking 7.0 after remarking.
My experience:
- There are no shortcuts except a bit of luck, which is not in our hands anyway.
Treat it like a game – you know how much you normally get in the Listening and Reading, so try to score 0.5 Band higher than your target. If your target is 7.0, you should get 7.5 when you prepare at home.
- I don’t believe in a large number of attempts. You should rather spend that money on good coaching. If you are a first timer or your English is below average, allow for 3 months of preparation. I have many friends taking the test 5 times and still getting a 5.5, which shows that lack of preparation can not be compensated for by multiple attempts.
- Think that you will take it only ONCE, and won’t have any more attempts. I said to myself that I will shave my head if I get less than 7.0! Between you and me, I didn’t, despite my 6.5 in speaking But the point is such promise will make you study with vigor.
- I found “Ace the IELTS” a very good and simple book to follow.
- For writing and speaking you need an expert’s advice who can tell your range of score by a sample writing or speaking. Work based on his/her suggestions. In my experience no self help works for Writing and Speaking. Don’t attempt an exam unless you obtain a mark from your coach in speaking and writing, that is consistent with your target score.
- Don’t take anything lightly: I thought I could do well easily in speaking, but I could not.
- To be good at writing you need to master in every aspect of it: spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, even word count.
- Practice tests should be done under time limits, preferably daily. You should work on your faults, and learn where you usually make mistakes. You can find out how much you will get in a real exam, if you do practice tests properly, including speaking – record a sample, and show it to an expert.
- Don’t practice the same tests again and again, because that way you really don’t challenge yourself. Collect and do more tests.
- Find and practice your problematic question types – do one type of questions for half a day or a day, to master the areas where you are weak.
- Finally – there is no point in thinking, thinking and thinking, JUST DO IT, and enjoy.”

Writing essays can be a very daunting task. Brainstorming, drafting, researching, and referencing can sometime be unmanageable. Microsoft Word 2010′s reference function is a good productivity tool to manage citations and bibliography.

In this article we will show you how to create a reference list using Word 2010. We will also show you how to share you reference with your peers and how to create your own customized reference style.

Creating References

Microsoft Reference function is accessible from the reference tab.

Word 2010 comes with a list of default referencing style. Choose the referencing style that you want to use.

Click on the ‘Insert Citation’ button to open the add citation window.

Word 2010 allow us to add different source type such as ‘Journal Article’ for our essay.

Click on the insert citation button to view a list of your citation and click any of them to create an inline citation in your essay.

You can create a bibliography page by clicking on the ‘Bibliography’ button.

Sharing Your Reference List

Microsoft Word 2010 save your references under %APPDATA%MicrosoftBibliographySources.xml. Open your command line and type echo %APPDATA%. This will show you where windows store your APPDATA. In my case Microsoft Word 2010 store my reference list under
C:UserszainulAppDataRoamingMicrosoftBibliographySources.xml. Remember that this file will not exist unless you create a reference list.

You can copy this XML file to use your references in different computers. You can also copy other references into this XML file. We advise that you should back up Source.xml file periodically so you will not loose your reference list.

To merge other references into your reference list just copy any entry inside the into the other Source.xml file. Just make sure that the contains a unique value.

Creating Custom Reference Style

We can create our own referencing style by creating custom XSL files under ‘C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14BibliographyStyle’. For those with exceptional XSL skills you can read Microsoft Word 2010 blog to learn how to create custom referencing style.

One of the challenge in creating our own XSL file for Microsoft word is that the XSL file itself is quite complicated and it might just be more productive to download a set of custom reference style from bibword and place the content of the zip file under ‘C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14BibliographyStyle’ and restart your Microsoft Word. You should see some new reference style from your Word 2010.

Two weeks ago I took a look at Facebook Connect (FC) summarizing what it is and why developers would want to integrate it with their own applications in part 1 of this series. Originally I had thought this would be a two post topic but as I have learned more about FC I think it’s going to take a few posts to get up and running successfully. So, in this post we’re going to get all the pre-requisites out of the way and establish a connection with Facebook from our own application. We will then look at how we can do things with that connection in subsequent posts. Ready or not… let’s get started!

Getting Started

In order to use FC with your own application you first need to set your application up within Facebook so you can get your hands on an API key. As is the case when working with any API your API key will be used throughout your FC integration code for authentication purposes.

Step 1 – Add Facebook Developers to Your Applications

The first thing you need to do in order to set your application up within Facebook is add the Facebook Developers Application to your approved applications list. To do this, visit http://www.facebook.com/developers/. Once you have added the developers application to your authorized applications list you will have access to all the developer resources that Facebook has to offer as well as a discussion board for questions and issues.

Step 2 – Setup Your Application

Now that you have added the developers application to your authorized applications list you can now proceed with setting your application up.

Navigate back to the Facebook Developers application by visiting http://www.facebook.com/developers/ and click the Set Up New Application button at the top right of the window.

Now comes the fun part… setting up an application in Facebook involves a mega-form full of options and other required pieces of information. The form is fairly self-explanitory so I won’t take the time to go through it all with you. The only thing I will point out is the Connect tab. This section of the form concerns all the FC settings as they relate to your application. The only thing you need to concern yourself with at this point is the Base Domain field. “Specifying a base domain allows you to make calls using the PHP and JavaScript client libraries as well as get and store session information for any subdomain of the base domain.” Enter all the necessary information about your application and click Save Changes.

Establishing a Connection

Now that we have our API keys we can put the files in place that will help us establish a connection between our application and Facebook. I am having problems displaying code in my blog posts so for this post I’m just going to refer you to the FC getting started guide for the actual code to use. If any of you have any recommendations for tools to use to display code in WordPress blog posts I would love to hear them.

Step 1 – First the CCC File

The first thing we want to do is create something called the cross-domain channel communication (CCC) file. That’s an awfully big name for such a little file. Basically this file provides the Facebook JavaScript Client Library with what it needs in order to function properly.

Copy the code from the FC getting started guide located under #2 and paste it into a new file named xd_receiver.htm. This file needs to be placed in a directory that’s relative to the callback URL that you entered when setting up your application in the mega-form above. For those of you following along using CodeIgniter, you should be able to get away with placing this file in the root of your CI application. That’s where everything is really referenced from anyway regardless of the search engine friendly URLs.

Step 2 – Now the Test File

Now that we have the CCC file we can begin writing the file we are going to use to establish our connection. Since we are only testing things in this post we will just make a simple file that displays the Facebook log-in button and adds the application to the users approved applications list. Go ahead and create a new file named test.htm and then follow along with the getting started guide starting with #3 for the necessary markup. Again, for those CI users you can place this markup in a view file and load it using whatever template your program is using.

Before running the script you want to be sure to replace YOUR_API_KEY_HERE with your API key and with the appropriate path to the CCC file. Once you have done that you can upload the two files we’ve created and test.

That’s it!

When viewing your test file in a browser all you should see is a Connect button displayed. When you click the button you should see a pop-up window prompting you to either login to your Facebook account or give your application permission to access your profile like in the screen shot below:

Once you either login or give your application permission you can now go back to your Facebook account and look at the list of your authorized applications and you should now see your own application in the list.

What’s next?

We didn’t get into much of the real nitty gritty in this post but we did lay the ground work for what is to come. In the next post I will begin looking at how we can access information about our users from Facebook and how we can send data back. Stay tuned!

TCPView is a Windows program that will show you detailed listings of all TCP and UDP endpoints on your system, including the local and remote addresses and state of TCP connections. On Windows Server 2008, Vista, and XP, TCPView also reports the name of the process that owns the endpoint. TCPView provides a more informative and conveniently presented subset of the Netstat program that ships with Windows. The TCPView download includes Tcpvcon, a command-line version with the same functionality.

Using TCPView

When you start TCPView it will enumerate all active TCP and UDP endpoints, resolving all IP addresses to their domain name versions. You can use a toolbar button or menu item to toggle the display of resolved names. On Windows XP systems, TCPView shows the name of the process that owns each endpoint.

By default, TCPView updates every second, but you can use the Options|Refresh Rate menu item to change the rate. Endpoints that change state from one update to the next are highlighted in yellow; those that are deleted are shown in red, and new endpoints are shown in green.

You can close established TCP/IP connections (those labeled with a state of ESTABLISHED) by selecting File|Close Connections, or by right-clicking on a connection and choosing Close Connections from the resulting context menu.

You can save TCPView's output window to a file using the Save menu item.

Using Tcpvcon

Tcpvcon usage is similar to that of the built-in Windows netstat utility:

Deductive Databases

By staying with the simple data types, but adding recursion to this database language, one gets a language called (positive?) Datalog, which is the language underlying deductive databases. Deductive databases are an extension of relational databases which support more complex data modeling. In this section we will see how simple examples of deductive databases can be represented in Prolog, and we will see more of the limitations of Prolog.

A standard example in Prolog is a geneology database. An extensional relation stores the parent relation: parent(X,Y) succeeds with X and Y if X has parent Y. (Maybe do an example consisting of some English monarchs?) Given this parent relation, we can define the ancestor relation as follows:

    ancestor(X,Y) :- parent(X,Y).     ancestor(X,Y) :- parent(X,Z), ancestor(Z,Y).

This says that X has ancestor Y if X has parent Y; and X has ancestor Y if there is a Z such that X has parent Z and Z has ancestor Y. Given a definition for the parent relation as follows:

parent(elizabeth_II, charles_??). etc.

we can query about ancestors, such as:

:- ancestor(elizabeth_II,X).

and find all of Queen Elizabeth's ancestors.

This works very nicely in Prolog, since the parent graph is (essentially) a tree. However, if we try the same definition of transitive closure for a graph that is not acyclic like a tree, we can be in trouble. Say we have a relation owes(X,Y) which indicates that X owes money to Y, and we want to define a predicate avoids(X,Y), meaning that X tries to avoid running into Y. The definition is that people avoid someone to whom they owe money, and they avoid anyone that someone to whom they owe money avoids:

avoids(X,Y) :- owes(X,Y). avoids(X,Y) :- owes(X,Z), avoids(Z,Y).

This definition has the same form as the ancestor definition. The problem here is that the owes relation may be cyclic. It is possible for Andy to owe money to Bill, Bill to own money to Carl and Carl to owe money to Bill:

owes(andy,bill). owes(bill,carl). owes(carl,bill).

and if we ask who Andy avoids:

| ?- avoids(andy,X).

we get:

an infinite loop.

If we would like to use Prolog as an engine for deductive databases, this shows up a serious problem: that a user can write a simple specification (using only atoms and variablse) and yet Prolog won't give an answer, but will wander off to (or toward) infinity. One couldn't afford to give such a system to a naive database user. There it is important that any query come back with some answer. Think of an SQL system that sometimes went into an infinite loop. It wouldn't be much used, and certainly not by naive users.

This problem of infinite looping is a well-known problem in Prolog and Prolog programmers learn to program around it. The usual fix is to add an extra argument to the avoids/2 predicate that keeps the list of people encountered in the process of finding the avoidees. Then if one of them is encountered again, the search is made to fail at that point, since it is known that all avoidees from that one have already been found. I.e.,

avoids(X,Y,L) :- owes(X,Y), \+ member(Y,L). avoids(X,Y,L) :- owes(X,Z), \+ member(Z,L), avoids(Z,Y,[Z|L]).

Here we've used the Prolog predicate member/2, and the Prolog builtin, \+, which implements not. \+ member(Y,L) succeeds just in case member(Y,L) fails, and fails if it succeeds. Now with this program and the corresponding query, we get:

This fix works to avoid the infinite loop, but it sometimes has some undesirable properties. There are graphs for which the computation will be exponential in the number of arcs. Consider the case in which Andy owes money to Bill and Bob, and Bill and Bob owe money to Carl; Carl owes money to Dan and Dave, and Dan and Dave owe money to Evan; Evan owes money to Fred and Frank, and Fred and Frank owe money to George; and so on. The graph of the owes relation can be pictured as in Figure 2.2.

Of the major categories of NoSQL databases - document-oriented databases, key-value stores and graph databases - we've given the least attention to graph databases on this blog. That's a shame, because as many have pointed out it may become the most significant category.

Graph databases apply graph theory to the storage of information about the relationships between entries. The relationships between people in social networks is the most obvious example. The relationships between items and attributes in recommendation engines is another. Yes, it has been noted by many that it's ironic that relational databases aren't good for storing relationship data. Adam Wiggins from Heroku has a lucid explanation of why that is here. Short version: among other things, relationship queries in RDBSes can be complex, slow and unpredictable. Since graph databases are designed for this sort of thing, the queries are more reliable.

Google has its own graph computing system called Pregel (you can find the paper on the subject here), but there are several commercial and open source graph databases available. Let's look at a few.

Neo4j

This is one of the most popular databases in the category, and one of the only open source options. It's the product of the company Neo Technologies, which recently moved the community edition of Neo4j from the AGPL license to the GPL license (see our coverage here). However, its enterprise edition is still ~~proprietary~~ AGPL. Neo4j is ACID compliant. It's Java based but has bindings for other languages, including Ruby and Python.

Neo Technologies cites several customers, though none of them are household names.

Here's a fun illustration of how relationship data in graph databases works, from an InfoQ article by Neo Technologies COO Peter Neubauer:

FlockDB

FlockDB was created by Twitter for relationship related analytics. Twitter's Kevin Weil talked about the creation of the database, along with Twitter's use of other NoSQL databses, at Strange Loop last year. You can find our coverage here.

There is no stable release of FlockDB, and there's some controversy as to whether it can be truly referred to as a graph database. In a DevWebPro article Michael Marr wrote:

The biggest difference between FlockDB and other graph databases like Neo4j and OrientDB is graph traversal. Twitter's model has no need for traversing the social graph. Instead, Twitter is only concerned about the direct edges (relationships) on a given node (account). For example, Twitter doesn't want to know who follows a person you follow. Instead, it is only interested in the people you follow. By trimming off graph traversal functions, FlockDB is able to allocate resources elsewhere.

This lead MyNoSQL blogger Alex Popescu to write: "Without traversals it is only a persisted graph. But not a graph database."

However, because it's in use at one of the largest sites in the world, and because it may be simpler than other graph DBs, it's worth a look.

AllegroGraph

AllegroGraph is a graph database built around the W3C spec for the Resource Description Framework. It's designed for handling Linked Data and the Semantic Web, subjects we've written about often. It supports SPARQL, RDFS++, and Prolog.

AllegroGraph is a proprietary product of Franz Inc., which markets a number of Semantic Web products - including its flagship set of LISP-based development tools. The company claims Pfizer, Ford, Kodak, NASA and the Department of Defense among its AllegroGraph customers.

GraphDB

GraphDB is graph database built in .NET by the German company sones. sones was founded in 2007 and received a new round of funding earlier this year, said to be a "couple million" Euros. The community edition is available under an APL 2 license, while the enterprise edition is commercial and proprietary. It's available as a cloud-service through Amazon S3 or Microsoft Azure.

InfiniteGraph

InfiniteGraph is a proprietary graph database from Objectivity, the company behind the object database of the same name. Its goal is to create a graph database with "virtually unlimited scalability."

According to Gavin Clarke at The Register: "InfiniteGraph map is already being used by the CIA and Department of Defense running on top of the existing Objectivity/DB database and analysis engine."

Others

There are many more graph databases, including OrientDB, InfoGrid and HypergraphDB. Ravel is working on an open source implementation of Pregel. Microsoft is getting into the game with the Microsoft Reasearch project Trinity.

OpenOffice.org: Dù rằng cung cấp cho bạn đầy đủ các tiện ích xử lý văn bản, bảng tính và cơ sở dữ liệu tương thích với Microsoft Office nhưng OpenOffice.org lại hoàn toàn miễn phí. Bộ ứng dụng mạnh mẽ (và hoàn toàn tương tích với các tài liệu Office) này sẽ làm cho bạn không muốn bỏ tiền ra để trang bị bất cứ một bộ phần mềm văn phòng nào khác.

ThinkFree Online Beta: Phần mềm văn phòng chạy trên trình duyệt này cho phép bạn chỉnh sửa các tài liệu, bảng tính và tập tin thuyết trình tương thích với Microsoft Office. Phần mềm này dù khởi động chậm nhưng có khả năng xử lý công việc rất hiệu quả.

AbiWord: Nếu tất cả những gì bạn cần chỉ là một trình xử lý văn bản, hãy dùng thử AbiWord. Đây là tiện ích xử lý văn bản nhỏ gọn nhưng đầy đủ tính năng cần thiết, tương tích với các tài liệu Microsoft Word. Ngoài ra, AbiWord cũng có giao diện tương tự Microsoft Word.

Pegasus Mail: Là một tiện ích gửi nhận thư điện tử được yêu thích từ lâu, Pegasus còn chút ít khó khăn để sử dụng do có quá nhiều tùy chọn và giao diện không thuận tiện. Tuy nhiên, tiện ích này cung cấp nhiều khả năng kiểm soát thư điện tử, bao gồm tính năng ghép thư lại với nhau (merge) và nhiều tùy chọn lọc thư rác đa dạng hơn các tiện ích gửi nhận thư điện tử miễn phí khác cung cấp.

LIÊN LẠC VÀ TRAO ĐỔI THÔNG TIN

Trillian Basic: Nếu đang sử dụng các dịch vụ nhắn tin của AIM, ICQ, IRC, MSN Messenger hay Yahoo Messenger, bạn hãy “xếp xó” các tiện ích này và thay tất cả bằng một tiện ích duy nhất, Trillian Basic. Chương trình có giao diện sáng sửa và không có quảng cáo.

Festoon Beta: Tiện ích bổ sung (add-on) cho Skype và Google Talk cho phép người dùng hai dịch vụ này có thể gọi cho nhau. LỊCH VÀ SẮP SẾP

Yahoo Calendar: Nếu bạn không phản đối việc thỉnh thoảng xuất hiện quảng cáo cạnh lịch làm việc thì Yahoo Calendar là dịch vụ trực tuyến sáng giá nhất hiện nay. Mục Time Guides cho phép bạn dễ dàng chèn vào các ngày nghỉ, thông tin thời tiết và các sự kiện từ Yahoo Groups vào lịch làm việc; phần mềm có khả năng đồng bộ lịch làm việc với Outlook, Outlook Express và thiết bị PDA Palm.

Ta-Da List: Dịch vụ quản lý danh sách các việc cần làm này dễ sử dụng, cho phép bạn tạo danh sách công việc, ghi chú các việc cần làm và đánh dấu chúng khi đã hoàn thành trực tiếp từ trình duyệt.

Del.icio.us giúp bạn “theo dấu” các trang web yêu thích dễ dàng hơn và từ bất cứ máy tính nào có nối mạng Internet. Khi đưa một địa chỉ web lên website này, bạn cần bổ sung từ khóa. Từ đây trở đi, bạn có thể tìm kiếm những địa chỉ mà bạn hay người dùng khác đã đánh dấu với các từ khóa đó; qua đó làm cho website này trở thành một công cụ tìm kiếm hữu ích.

Các “widget” của Yahoo gồm các công cụ hấp dẫn để tìm kiếm, hiển thị ảnh, xem thông tin thời tiết và nhiều tính năng hữu ích khác.

BeInSync: Đôi lúc, việc đem theo bút USB bên mình có thể gây phiền toái. Khi ấy, hãy sử dụng BeInSync để đảm bảo bạn luôn có thể truy xuất các tập tin cần thiết. Yahoo Briefcase: Với giao diện đơn giản, Yahoo Briefcase là một trong những lựa chọn hàng đầu của nhiều người dùng. Đây có thể xem là cách dễ dàng nhất để lưu trữ và chia sẻ tập tin trực tuyến (hỗ trợ 30MB dung lượng lưu trữ).

BitTorrent: Có lẽ, bạn đã từng nghe nhiều người dùng sử dụng BitTorent để buôn bán nhạc và phim ảnh có bản quyền. Nhưng đây là dịch vụ hữu ích để nhanh chóng tải về các nội dung hợp pháp hoặc để chia sẻ dữ liệu riêng của mình.

Dù không một công cụ phòng chống spyware nào được đánh giá là “hoàn hảo” nhưng có thẻ xem Spybot là một “liều thuốc” mạnh. Ngoài khả năng tìm kiếm và tiêu diệt spyware, Spybot có thể liên tục giám sát những thay đổi của hệ thống, cung cấp cho bạn tùy chọn cho phép hay không cho phép những chỉnh sửa Registry trước khi chúng được thực hiện.

LavaSoft Ad-Aware SE Personal: Tiện ích này có thể kiểm tra máy tính để phát hiện sự hiện diện của spyware đang ẩn nấp trong bộ nhớ và đĩa cứng. Phiên bản miễn phí chỉ có thể thực hiện kiểm tra và phát hiện, không có chức năng giám sát liên tục. Tuy nhiên, Ad-Aware có thể phát hiện một vài spyware mà Spybot để “lọt sổ” (và ngược lại).

Microsoft Windows Defender: Dù phiên bản thử nghiệm Beta của phần mềm này (trước đây được biết với tên Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware) sẽ hết hạn vào 31/12/2006 nhưng Microsoft Windows Defender đáng giá để sử dụng. All-in-One Secretmaker: Nếu công việc bắt buộc phải sử dụng Internet Explorer, thì điều tối thiểu mà bạn cần làm ngay là “vá” các lổ hổng bảo mật trong trình duyệt này và All-in-One Secretmaker có thể giúp bạn điều này. Tiện ích này có khả năng ngăn chặn các banner quảng cáo, cửa sổ dạng pop-up, tính năng lọc thư rác cũng như cung cấp một bộ tiện ích dọn dẹp và bảo vệ hệ thống.

Anonymizer: Dịch vụ trình duyệt này sẽ giúp hiển thị một website mà bạn muốn xem mà không “tiết lộ” địa chỉ IP, cookie hay bất kỳ thông tin khác đến website mà bạn đang truy xuất.

GRC Shield Up: Tự hỏi không biết máy tính của mình có thật sự an toàn? Hãy ghé thăm website của Steve Gibson. Shield Up là một công cụ trên nền web thuận tiện để kiểm tra các lỗ hổng bảo mật thông dụng, như các cổng đang được mở và dịch vụ chia sẻ tập tin có thể bị tin tặc khai thác.

Avast Home Edition: Tiện ích quét virus dễ sử dụng này miễn phí với người dùng gia đình và phi thương mại. PHẦN MỀM VÀ DỊCH VỤ GIẢI TRÍ

Google Picasa: Hãy quên đi tiện ích quản lý hình ảnh đầy phức tạp đi kèm với máy ảnh số của bạn. Picasa của Google sẽ đem đến cho bạn sự dễ dàng trong việc sắp xếp, sửa chữa và chia sẻ hình ảnh.

Using Eclipse as Joomla! IDE

Eclipse is a so-called IDE (Integrated Development Environment), a software application that facilitates programmers in the process of software development. Eclipse is used for editing source code while a set of features aid to the process of writing this code: Syntax highlightning, error checking, debugging, version control, code completion, documentation, etcetera. This makes it ideal for developing Joomla! code.

Eclipse is not a visual programming tool, you need to be able to program to make use of the tool. The Eclipse IDE is available in multiple languages, but we recommend using the English version. Eclipse supports many programming languages like C++ and Java, but each language needs its own set of tools (debugger, compiler, documentation). At the moment the standard Eclipse version does not support PHP that well, but there are at least two projects that extend Eclipse with useful PHP-oriented features: PDT and PHPEclipse.

Within the Eclipse project a subproject called PDT (PHP Development Tools) has been setup (with the help of Zend Technologies among others) to aid specifically webprogrammers using the PHP programming language. Besides the PDT project, the PHPEclipse also extends Eclipse but has less official support than the PDT project. There is also an all-in-one distribution for PHPEclipse called EasyEclipse.

Downloading, installing and configuring Eclipse PDT

While a PDT-based program like Zend Studio allows for development of deployed webapplications as well (for instance through the use of FTP or SCP), Eclipse assumes the development is done on a local machine only. Ofcourse it does not make sense to make changes on a production environment, but because of this assumption you will need to be running a webserver on your local machine as well.

On the Joomla! Docs site you will find a complete tutorial on how to configure Eclipse on a Windows-based computer. To setup a Windows-based Apache webserver (plus MySQL and PHP support) XAMPP is used as example, but there are other alternatives like WAMPServer, EasyPHP and JSAS. Make sure the package includes PHP5 and MySQL5.

When using MacOS or Linux the webserver environment (Apache, MySQL, PHP) can be installed as an integrated part of the OS. With all webserver environment the principle remains the same: You will need a running webserver environment on your local computer. Websites (like Joomla!) running within this environment can then be edited by using the website root-directory as Eclipse workspace directory.

It is recommended to use the PDT All-In-One package as this includes all neccessary dependencies. Also the usage of PDT version 2.0 is recommended.

Extra features in PDT

By navigating within Eclipse to "Help", then "Software Updates" and then "Find and Install" you will be able to install extra features to Eclipse. We recommend the following plugins:

For each plugin you can click "Add site" to add the URL as another resource for finding extra features.

When instelling Subclipse the "Subclipse" plugin itself and the "Subversion Client Adapter" are required. You will still need a proper Subversion client, but the bare minimum binary (http://subversion.tigris.org/) will do. To make sure your client can be found by Subclipse, you will need the appropriate Java libraries within Eclipse as well. Just check both "JavaHL Adapter" and the "SVNKit Adapter" to make sure this works.

There is also the feature RSE (Remote System Explorer) which allows for the usage of files placed on a remote server. At the moment only FTP is supported as protocol. To install RSE/FTP browse to "Find and Install" and then search the Available Software for the keyword "ftp". Besides FTP there is also a SSH connection available (RSE/FTP).

Cài đặt SVN trên môi trường windows

Bước 1: cài đặt svn server

Cách 1: download phiên bản subversion mới nhất và cài đặt subversion bằng dòng lệnh. Cách này thủ công và khá mất thời gian. Xin tham khảo thêm ở phần cài đặt SVN trên môi trường Linux.

Khi sử dụng cách 1, cần phải cài đặt thêm mod_dav_svn và mod_authz_svn modules cho apache (nếu bạn sử dụng apache làm webserver).

Cách 2: download và sử dụng visual svn server từ trang web chính thức

Bước 2: cài đặt svn client

SVN client là công cụ đắc lực để quản lý mã nguồn, bao gồm các thao tác chính là thêm, bớt, sửa, xóa, checkin, checkout, so sánh phiên bản.

Tortoise là sự lựa chọn thường xuyên trên windows. Đó là một công cụ quản lý source code visual khá mạnh, hỗ trợ nhiều giao thức. Bạn có thể tham khảo thông tin về tortoise svn bởi liên kết sau

How to Enable or Disable Quick Launch in Windows 7

OPTION ONE

Add Quick Launch to Taskbar

1. Right click on a empty space on the taskbar, then select (hover on) Taskbar and click on New Toolbar. (See screenshot below)

2. In the Folder line, type or copy the location below. (See screenshot below)

3. Click on the Select Folder button. (See screenshot above)

4. You now have a Quick Launch toolbar on the taskbar. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: Click on the arrow to see your Quick Launch shortcuts.

5. To Expand the Quick Launch Toolbar
A) Unlock the taskbar.

B) Left click and hold on the dotted separator line just to the left of Quick Launch, then drag it to the left or right to adjust to unhide all of the icons. Release the left click when done. (See screenshot below)

C) Lock the taskbar.
6. To Remove Quick Launch Toolbar Icon Text or Title
A) Unlock the taskbar.

B) Right click on the dotted separator line just to the left of Quick Launch, then uncheck the Show Text and Show Title by clicking on them. (See screenshot below step 5B)

C) Lock the taskbar.
7. To Have Small or Large Icons for Quick Launch Toolbar
A) Unlock the taskbar.

B) Right click on the dotted separator line just to the left of Quick Launch, then click on View and select to have Large Icons or Small Icons. (See screenshot below step 5B)

C) Lock the taskbar.

8. To Have Quick Launch Toolbar on Left Side of Taskbar
A) Unlock the taskbar.

B) Left click and hold on the dotted separator line just to the left of Quick Launch, then drag Quick Launch as far to the left on the taskbar as you are able to and release.

B) If you still have any pinned program icons to the left of Quick Launch, then left click and hold on the dotted separator line just to the left of the icons and hold, and drag it to the right past Quick Launch and release. (See screenshot below)

C) The Quick Launch toolbar is now on the far left side of the taskbar. (See screenshot below)

D) Left click and hold on the dotted separator line for the other icons and drag them left or right to make any adjustments to how you want them placed on the taskbar. (See screenshot above)

E) Lock the taskbar.

9. Now that you have Quick Launch on the taskbar, you will need to save your current theme (step 4 at this link).
NOTE: If you make any changes to your theme, you will need to save the theme afterwards, or you will lose Quick Launch the next time you restart the computer.

10. If you have a 32-bit Windows 7, then it has been reported that you may need to turn off UAC if Quick Launch is disappearing on you after every restart.
